pavilion

austin, tx, 1992, unbuilt, studio project - The structure acts as a conduit for nature, a filter to the multiplicities of the surrounding environment in which it is sited: the seasonal changes of the trees and shrubs, the fauna which find shelter under its span, the people who come to sit and contemplate, to watch and listen, perhaps each other, for awhile. The supporting pylons are sunk into the earth. The ribs are then connected to the pylons at their base, and raised into their final position by a pulley system on the temporary scaffolding at its center (like the closing petals of a flower). The individual shelves are then put in place and bolted to the ribs. Finally, two layers of dichroic fabric are stretched between the shelves.
