mausoleum

mausoleum

paris, france, 1992, unbuilt, studio project - Situated in Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France, at a prominent junction of several paths, the structure is lifted off the ground on piers just above the surface of fine black lava rock. The exterior of the building is a cube: each facade being a collage: a build-up of layers of stone attached to a steel rectangular tube grid. Behind the stone and frame is a stud wall with material layers exposed. Just as the facades are layers extending in three dimensions, spaces on and in the facade itself become repositories for people's offerings or tokens. This interactive element of the building is integral with the way people have always decorated the tombs in Pere Lachaise. The interior is a reduction of dimension: the layers of materials, symbolic of a build-up of knowledge and memories, have been flattened to two dimensional abstractions on the walls. Interaction is no longer possible - just as no new knowledge or change is possible after death.
