los angeles, ca, 1999, unbuilt, cuningham group - The LA County Museum of Art wanted to combine cutting edge museum techniques, interactivity and education, and cultural symbolism and sensitivity in their new experimental Boone Gallery. At the heart of the proposal was the idea of a journey which is articulated along forms and within spaces drawn from African models. The plan evolved as a tapestry -- one experience at a time until an integrated composition was formed. The four "vessels" are symbolic of drums, dwellings, and pottery. The ribbon-like display and the bench recall the traditional "'wind wall" or a dance frozen in space... the interactive kiosk "pebbles" are influenced by the natural African landscape as well as African art and the abstract sculptures of Martin Puryear.
