los angeles, ca, 1992, unbuilt, studio project - Refraining from conventions of "parti" and "concept" which emphasize architecture as a solution or an end-product, my primary challenge was a personalized investigation of the process of making architecture. By emphasizing the process vs. content, the project developed dynamically vs. linearly. My approach was to discover possible relationships between the individual parts of the program through the processes and techniques inherent in collage -- a dynamic process creating two dimensional compositions which can then be interpreted as having three dimensional qualities in the complex formal relationships between juxtaposed and overlapped pieces. The individual pieces are directly related to the program in size and shape, yet retain an abstract quality as they are composed. In three dimensions, the juxtaposed pieces can be read as interconnecting spaces.
